Auto insurance companies consider tracking drivers to reduce rates

There are growing signs that auto insurance companies in Ontario may have found a way to comply with the Ontario government's decision to cut premiums.

The average reduction of 15 percent was a decision foisted upon Premier Wynne's Liberals by the Ontario NDP.

The Toronto Star reports car insurance firms are quickly embracing so-called "usage-based" insurance, following the lead set by Desjardins Insurance.

5 months ago it launched 'Ajusto,' which offers a 5 percent discount if a driver installs a wireless device in their vehicle that tracks driving patterns.

It says a driver's insurance premiums could be cut up to 25 percent based on how well or how poorly the driver performs behind the wheel.

Potential savings are in the 12 to 15 percent range, which is roughly where Queen's Park wants them to go.

Each company would have to devise it's on on-board system and then put it up for approval to the provincial regulator.

My driving record speaks for itself. I don't need an electronic device attached to my car to tell me or anyone else how I drive. Just do a abstract driving check through the ministry and it will show that I have an impeccable driving record and I have yet to see any discount in my premiums. Don't hold your breath waiting for a rebate or discount.

The only thing I do know for certain is, if the insurance industry does anything, it will certainly not be for the benefit of consumers. Therefore, I will be the last guy dragged kicking and screaming into this "Ajusto" scam when the government legislates that we all are required to have it. Because the insurance racketeers and the government have been in bed together for a very long time, now... but it's the consumers who are the ones getting euchred.

Still, there will be a certain amusement to watching the insurance racketeers spin things so it looks like they're giving consumers a break. What's disturbing, however, is the percentage of the gullible public that will believe them.

@Angry Bill Well you can count me out of the gullible public- because I don't believe one word that comes out of their mouth, or the promises the Liberals proposed that they get the insurance companies to drop their rates.
And hell with freeze over, pigs will fly, and the skies will turn purple before I let one of those silly black box devices anywhere near my car.

Between the insurance, the drive clean program, and the oncoming tax increase to "improve" the transportation infrastructure, it won't be long before I'm forced to give up driving altogether- or move to another province.

Really,

Why is every time the Liberals are forced into slapping the hand that feeds them with political contributions and the Liberals float these lead balloons?

I think we already had a system imposed on us by the lier "Daddy Dalton" with the so called "Smart Meters" that turned all of our hydro meters into money making machines!

Anytime our illustrious governments meddle with any program, it is not in our favour, its that simple. They have all the "bean counters" our taxes can buy to work out how to take a little more each time.

Every man, women, and child in Ontario now owes nearly $18,000.00 each, read the next excerpt from the Financial Post:

On a per-person basis, Ontario’s bonded debt (the concept of net debt is not used in U.S. public accounting) currently stands at nearly $18,000, over four-and-a-half times that of California at $3,800. As a share of the economy, Ontario’s debt (38.6%) is more than five times that of the Golden State (7.7% of GDP). This is a stunning difference in the burden of debt, particularly given the attention and concern focused on California compared with Ontario.

Everyone of voting age person should "NAIL THESE BASTARDS UP" as Huey Long would have said in the late 1920's.

Don't be fooled by slick lawyers masquerading as politicians who repay big businesses that make large contributions. Andrea Horwath knows the position she put the Liberals in, but she failed to carve out the decrease to our insurance in stone and didn't anticipate the trickery the Liberals would stoop to.

Don't be fooled by the oldest trick that a snake oil salesman use to trick people and draw their attention away from the ball. DON"T PLAY THEIR SHELL GAME !

We need a down to earth, unpolished and honest person to lead this province and drive the corruption from the office they have sworn to up hold.

@Tammy It's like we are being asked to do surveillance on ourselves. Insurers will be using it like they do facebook accounts if you get in an accident. It's all evidence. Ontario's insurers are lobbying the government to change the privacy laws so that they can share drivers personal information with other parties if you make a claim. All part of the war on fraud. You know the one, where the IBC calls accident victims snakes in their videos and puts it on u-tube. We are sucked into this fake war on fraudsters and yet this backhanded way of 'sign this or we won't give you a discount' is just fine, good going says our government. There's already black boxes in cars, they use the info if you get in an accident - we're just getting snowed into an empty promise of discounted premiums.

Poor people. How can you be so naive to believe in that the government will ever act in your behalf? The auto insurance business in Ontario is a legalized monetary crime business approved by the government. Since they don't want to deal with this they are giving you the "choice" to choose from. The insurance companies care ONLY about making profit and every policy starts with penalizing new drivers with extremely high rates and after driving so many years without claims they still find some reasons to overcharge you. This problem can be fixed fairly easy:
1. The current licensing system in Ontario is one of the most idiotic system on the planet. The "three step" licensing is the bankruptcy of the common sense. In most European countries the traffic rules are in the school program from early age. For drivers training you have to do 30-40 hours of driving training and written test and all this is from age of 17 in most places. So why invent the wheel if its already invented? Why in Ontario we can't have a similar system which everywhere else is working? It is a good idea to train kids from age of 16 for driving, but honestly, until they turn 17-18 they should not drive on their own. Not because they can't do it but it takes time to develop driving routines. So this G1, G2 is for just taking money and charge lots of premiums. Either you know how to drive or you don't, there is no in between.
2. The insurance policies are good to have but it should be run as a one big pool on non-profit basis and certainly with make sense coverage. One huge reason why we pay so much because of liability. The legal system is based on this cancer growth and ever since we pay for it. If the insurance policy would not cover unrealistic ideas then probably drivers would be more careful in traffic too. Unfortunately the mentality is based on "well, I'm covered". Again, the government does not have to invent their own wheel, they just have to use one and spin it. Germany has lot better system in this regard...
3. These black boxes should be illegal to use since they can use the data against the driver regardless it is justified or not. For example, if somebody drives on 80km/h speed limit road and passes an other vehicle, and lets say, that had to be accomplished by speed up to 110 km/h then the box records only that you drove 30km/h over the speed limit. So, is this going to work? Are you a speeder?
The real change is us and not the government. We have to smoke out this devil worshiping mafia ones and forever....

So I'm supposed to believe the insurance companies who are the first to screw me, the customer, every possible way, THIS time have my best interest at heart?

It's already been suggested that those very insurance companies are rising their rates prior to dropping them, but THIS time, I'm suppose to believe they have my best interest at heart?

The very insurance companies who drastically decreased their payout over the past few years, and yet did not decrease their fees NOW have my best interest at heart?

I'm holding my right hand in the air with my three middle fingers up... read between the lines. That's my message to insurance companies on this one.

Raise your rates, offer a device that promises lower rates, then use the very same device to raise your rates again. Repeat. Brilliant! _|_
