New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath says today’s report by the Auditor
General shows an Ontario where executives take home million dollar
bonuses while families fall behind, and governments are focused on
self-serving spin instead of delivering results for families that need
it.
“People feel like they can barely afford to heat their home, but they’ve been stuck with the bill for million dollar bonuses for public sector executives,” said Horwath. “This report paints a picture of a government that’s lost sight of the priorities that matter to people.”
“Whether it’s families watching their hydro bills climb while executive pay at OPG skyrockets, or the Liberals helping auto insurance companies cut benefits in half while drivers don’t see any premium reductions, it’s clear that the Liberals aren’t interested in helping out people.”
Horwath noted that while families are feeling increasingly squeezed by growing hydro bills, the number of executives at OPG has increased by 74 per cent since 2005, even while the number of overall staff decreased.
“Instead of showing respect for people’s money and people’s priorities, the government’s left families falling behind while handing out lucrative perks to a lucky few. A mom or dad of a child with autism has to wait years for treatment. People are stuck in the hospital because they can’t get rehab. Meanwhile one hydro executive collected $392,000 just for moving,” continued Horwath.
Horwath also highlighted the fact that the Liberals’ plan to sell the ONTC is yet another example of a government that cares more about spin than whether their plans will actually work.
“The Auditor has confirmed what we long knew: this short-sighted, political decision will cost Ontarians more than $800 million as well cut northerners off from services they’ve relied on for decades,” said Horwath.
